A step-by-step on how to sculpt a solid form.
1. Start by sectioning the hair into four quadrants for control while sculpting. Section the hair from the forehead to the crown and the crown down to the nape, then section hair from apex to ears.
2. Position the head in an upright position. If you are refining the nape hairline, you may tilt the head forward. Take a small 1-inch horizontal section down the back of the nape; this will be your guide for the entire sculpture.
3. Comb the hair down to natural distribution. Natural distribution means the hair is laying down the way it grows, and it’s not pulled away from the head or pushed into the head.
4. Project the hair from natural fall, also called zero degrees. With your fingers and shears parallel to the parting, begin to sculpt the hair.
5. You will use a stationary design line. This will create the form line for the Solid form sculpture. Be sure to check for symmetry and balance before proceeding.
6. Once the stationary design line is established, and the lengths are balanced, you will you use the design line to create the rest of the form as you work your way up on the head.
7. It is vital to have no tension when sculpting over the ears; this could result in a graduated length. To avoid this, comb the hair down and before sculpting gently, take the back of your comb and make a small indent over the ear.
8. When you get to the recession line of the head, distribute the hair as it will be worn. The best way to do this is slightly curve the hair around the recession line.
9. Continue checking for balance and symmetry.
10. Once you have completed sculpting the lengths, refine the perimeter form line.
11. When the sculpture is complete, air form the hair to the style of your choice.
