How To Create Fingerwaves

A classic beautiful look!

Fingerwaving is the art of shaping and defining the hair into beautiful waves. This wave pattern is a very feminine style developed in the 1920's and still worn today.

Fingerwaving is created by molding two complete alternating oblongs (shapings) that are joined and connected by a ridge. Although fingerwaves are a complex design, the end result is beautiful! Follow the steps below to create these fingerwaves.

1. Start by washing the hair so it's completely clean

Comb a generous amount of hair gel through clean, damp hair. (An important note is that hair should be damp but not dripping wet.)

2. Comb the hair to evenly distribute the gel throughout the hair.

3. Create a deep side part in hair. The hair parting can be on the left or the right side of the head. You could even use a center part for fingerwaves!

4. It's a good idea to start the fingerwaves on the side with the most hair first.

5. Begin by laying your middle finger flat (horizontally) over the hair.

6. Next, take your comb and press it against the side of the finger. Drag the teeth of the comb straight down and horizontally along your finger until you create a "C" shaped curve, also known as a ridge.

7. Shift your middle finger back in a horizontal direction to continue building the series of waves towards the back of the head. During this process the hair will end up with one convex end and one concave end. A completed fingerwave will create parallel curved lines.

8. Repeat the steps above to the other side of the head. *

*If your hair is a longer length, when you get to the nape, you could do flat pin curls to keep the design flow.
